Scotland’s batting lineup, according to former England Test player Jonathan Trott, is full of “match-winners” as they aim to move to the second round of the T20 World Cup for the first time.

In each of their previous three efforts, the Scots have failed to go past the first round, in 2007, 2009, and 2016.

They won their single encounter at the tournament five years ago, an eight-wicket win over lowly Hong Kong in a rain-affected contest, but it wasn’t enough to advance.

The revised format is in this year’s edition in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. On the other hand, presents a significant potential for Scotland, which is rated 14th in Twenty20 cricket.

The top two nations from each of the two four-team groups will advance to the Super 12 stage. Where they will compete against the best teams in the globe.

Bangladesh is the Group B favorite, with Oman and Papua New Guinea. Both ranked lower than Scotland, being the other two teams.

Trott, who represented England in both Test and white-ball cricket, was hired as a batting adviser for Scotland ahead of the World Cup, and he likes what he sees.

“We have some really good players in this Scotland squad, the batting line-up is full of match-winners,” the 40-year-old told The Scotsman.

“However, because T20 matches ebb and flow so much, it’s impossible to rely on just one player to perform well; to achieve strong outcomes, the entire XI must perform well.”

“In terms of batters, they’re a formidable group of lads.” When the World Cup begins, it will be a test of who can handle the strain and not allow the occasion control their emotions.”

In 2007, Scotland finished last in a group with Pakistan and India, while in 2009, it came last in a group with South Africa and New Zealand.

Lower-ranked nations had more chances in the 2016 tournament, but Scotland’s win over Hong Kong was insufficient to qualify from a four-team group that featured Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.
