On Tuesday (December 27) evening, the BCCI revealed India’s T20I and ODI teams for the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka. While the seniors were anticipated to miss the T20I series, with Hardik Pandya taking over as stand-in captain. Many were startled to see Shikhar Dhawan drop down the pecking order in the 50-over format. When senior players were unavailable, the guy serve as captain of Team India.

He led India on trips to Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and New Zealand. However, his form has recently slipped dramatically, coinciding with Shubman Gill clicking in every potential outing. Dhawan’s previous six ODI scores were 72, 3, 28, 7, 8, 3. Even in the South Africa ODIs at home, he didn’t appear to be in strong form, which may have allowed the ever-impressive Gill to replace him in the ODI team.

Will Shikhar Dhawan be able to make a successful comeback?

Shikhar Dhawan is already out of contention for Tests and T20Is. With his exclusion from the ODI team, the southpaw’s international career may have come to an end. It remains how Dhawan responds to his firing. With less than a year till the ODI World Cup in India, the selectors may have shifted their focus away from Dhawan.

Dhawan played 167 One-Day Internationals and scored 6793 runs at an average of 44.11, with 17 centuries and 39 fifties. Another intriguing event is the removal of KL Rahul from the vice-captaincy and the elevation of Hardik Pandya to the position. Rahul has been in a slump for quite some time and did not have a nice Bangladesh tour either.
