Ricky Ponting praises young Indian batter, saying, “He’s got as much talent as I did, if not more.”
Young opening batsman Prithvi Shaw has been at his best in the next IPL 2022 season, collecting 160 runs in four innings for Delhi Capitals, including two half-centuries. On the other hand, he’s currently receiving a slew of offer help from David Warner, and the two make for an entertaining opening duo. Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi Capitals, has always admired Prithvi and now thinks that the young Indian player has equal, if not greater, talent than he did.
Ponting remarked in an interview with The Delhi Capitals Podcast: “When I see Prithvi play, I see a guy with as much, if not more, skill as I did, and I want to be able to develop him into a player who plays over 100 Test matches for India and represents his country as much as possible. If I think back on the teams I’ve coached, that is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.”
Ponting also discussed what he enjoys most about coaching IPL teams and how he wants his players to succeed at the international level as well.

“Rohit Sharma was a teenager when I took over the Mumbai Indians. Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya had both missed games. Many of the players I’ve taught there have gone on to play for India, and I want to be able to do the same here. That is what coaching is all about for me: if I can have an impact on the way these men play cricket with us, and if, once they leave, they go on to be strong international players as a result of their time here.”
