Avesh Khan and his maza of quick bowling

A message from a buddy appeared on Avesh Khan’s phone at 9.30 p.m. on January 26. He carefully read it and felt a tingle of delight. He collected himself and approached his parents, who were watching television, to inform them that he had been selected for the Indian team for the upcoming series against the West Indies. But when he took note of his parents’ fervor, he burst out chuckling. Through the tears of joy he sob he saw his journey; from a rough youth from a cricketing station whose only desire was to bowl as quick as he could; to bowling alongside two of the world’s best quick bowlers in the IPL and being on the verge of playing for his nation. He reflected on his father’s penances—his father’s roadside paan shop had been closed down by local specialists a couple of years prior, leaving him jobless—and his mother’s role as a shake of quality amid his youthful years.

His relatives and aunts’ blessings; grandmother’s prayers; and his friends’ support; and his coaches’ guidance, particularly Amay Khurasiya, who also recognized him and fine-tuned him in his academy.

“I worked quite hard. Yes, I was fortunate to have excellent mentors. But I wouldn’t be who I am now without the help of my family. This is the least I could have done to repay them (playing professional cricket). “Putting a smile on their face has always been the one thing that has ever mattered; to me,” he says, his voice faltering briefly before regaining its measured tone.

The constant ringing of phones broke the emotional trance. He then lost track of time. “For several hours, everyone’s phone rang nonstop. It was too late for a party, but we managed to get some sweet; and delivered them to the neighbors, he explains.

It was already 2 a.m. by the time the celebrations came to an end. “I have no recollection of anything.” I is so exhausting; that the instant I hit the bed, I fell asleep,” he says. He had earlier predicted that the night he was chosen for his country, he would not be able to sleep. But here, like a log, he slept sweetly.

Avesh is unafraid of anything. I want to approach everything as a challenge and face life as it is; he says, giving us a glimpse into his personality. He’s been through enough hardships in his life to realize; that he needs to be fearless every time he gets onto the field. Nonetheless, he was jittery at the outset of the previous IPL season. “I hadn’t played much in the previous few years, maybe one or two games a year. He acknowledges, “I was a little anxious before the first game; because I’d had my share of injuries in the past.”

He’s so nostalgic that he shows up for a tennis-ball cricket game on the spur of the moment. He showed up for a match under floodlights in an Indore housing complex park just two weeks ago. A sizable audience had gathered in thin sweaters only to see him; dressed in a cream t-shirt and track pants and bowling as quickly as he could. “I play tennis-ball cricket whenever I have free time or feel like it. It’s what made me, and switching back and forth isn’t tough for me,” he explains.

“Those days were utilized to be extraordinary,” he says, slipping down a memory path. On a few days, I used to play a half-dozen recreations from eight o’clock in the morning till late in the evening; until it was totally dull. I began it for fun, but it rapidly turned into an energy that has brought me this far. So I’m able to let go of my attachment to it, “he explains. He couldn’t break the bond with a squeaky, ancient second-hand bike, either. “My guardians brought me an ancient one since we couldn’t bear to urge an unused one. It was one of my closest companions. I used to bring it to school, at that point, to cricket hone, and lastly, home.

Life would change even more rapidly around him in the coming years; but nothing compares to the thrill of being with his parents and extended family amid the chaotic splendor of his old house.
