Aakash Chopra- “Rare error on Rohit Sharma’s part” in IND vs NZ 2021

Aakash Chopra believes Rohit Sharma blundered in the first T20I against New Zealand by failing to bowl Venkatesh Iyer.

Iyer made his Team India debut in last night’s encounter in Jaipur. Mostly to provide a sixth bowling option for the team. Sharma, on the other hand, only deployed five specialist bowlers and did not give him the ball.

Aakash Chopra was baffled by the new full-time Indian T20I skipper’s decision not to bowl Iyer. While analyzing India’s bowling performance in a video published on his YouTube channel.

“The Indian team said they need a fast-bowling all-rounder, so they played Venkatesh Iyer at six. But they didn’t get him to bowl. I will say it’s a rare error on Rohit Sharma’s part. Generally his captaincy is perfect, but it just left me a little befuddled.” He elaborated

The cricketer-turned-commentator went on to say that the newcomer could have been eased. Into the game during the Kiwi innings’ opening half.

“They could have got him to bowl, when you had won the toss and got to bowl first and the opposing team was struggling, especially in the first half. You could have got him to bowl one or two overs because Deepak Chahar and Siraj were not having a good day.” Chopra explained

In the middle of the overs, Venkatesh Iyer could have been forced to roll his arm over. However, because the surface was marginally helping the spinners, Rohit Sharma decided to stick with Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel in that period.

In the eight overs Chahar and Siraj bowled, they gave up 81 runs. In the last over he bowled, the latter sustained an injury to his left hand, putting his participation in the second match on Friday in jeopardy.
