Andrew Symonds has revealed that he was all set to join the Australian side for the T20 World Cup as a mentor

Andrew Symonds has stated that he was planning to join Australia’s T20 World Cup squad as a coach. However, because to the COVID-19 epidemic and restrictions, he was unable to accept the offer from head coach Justin Langer.

Symonds built a name for himself in the limited-overs format thanks to his bat-and-ball skills as well as his outstanding fielding.

The former Australian all-rounder told foxsports.com.au that the call-up meant a lot to him and that he was excited to get started.

“Justin Langer is the man who contacted me. Because he’s had Ponting, Hussey, and Steve Waugh go on the Ashes, they were just trying to get players who had played different types of cricket and had extended periods of success in and around the group and a fresh face,” Andrew Symonds said.

“I was really excited to go on that and honored. I said, ‘Thus, I can’t believe you’ve asked me to go’. However, I certainly wasn’t expecting that looking at the players who had done it.” he added

The Australian squad has been attempting to enlist the support of game legends to provide guidance and knowledge throughout crucial campaigns. Ricky Ponting has joined Australia’s men’s team ahead of the 2019 ICC Men’s World Cup. When the team flew to England for the 2019 Ashes, Steve Waugh was part of the support group.

Modern-day hitters, according to Andrew Symonds, don’t bother to get themselves in, especially when the game is played in its shortest version.

He praised MS Dhoni’s strategy of spending time in the middle before aiming for big smashes and encouraged the youngsters to follow suit.

“He (MS Dhoni) was one of the best, but he spent the time. Are we spending enough time getting ourselves in? It seems to me as if we go a little bit too hard, too quickly. But they probably call me a dinosaur. If they want to compete and win these things, it’s a major part they need to fix up,” said Andrew Symonds.

In limited-overs cricket, Andrew Symonds has played 198 ODIs and 14 T20Is for Australia, in addition to 26 Test matches. In international cricket, he has 6887 runs and 165 wickets to his name.
