Glenn Maxwell says “I was being a sponge to Virat and AB” in IPL 2021

Glenn Maxwell has spoken out about his experience playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). In the IPL 2021 alongside Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian all-rounder described himself as a “sponge” to the RCB greats throughout the tournament. He claimed he was privileged to learn something new from Kohli and De Villiers every day. Whether through observation or batting beside them.

“Every day was a learning experience, every day I was finding something new out. I was being a sponge to Virat and AB, just watching the way they go about things. That’s been one thing in the IPL I’ve been extremely thankful for the opportunities it gives you to learn off the best players in the world. I was extremely fortunate to have two of the greats in the game in the same team. In the same batting line-up who were open to share their experiences and talk to me about their game.” Glenn Maxwell remarked

Glenn Maxwell revealed that the learnings were not one-sided and Kohli and De Villiers, too, asked him questions. He said this open communication made him feel self-assured and “10-feet tall”.

“It makes you feel 10-feet tall when you have their backing, they’re watching you and ask you questions. It makes you feel confident, it makes you feel happy.” Glenn Maxwell said

However, RCB had a mediocre IPL 2021 season. They made it to the qualifying round but had to settle with fourth place. Glenn Maxwell’s outstanding season was responsible for most of the team’s success. The all-rounder, who did not smash a single six for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) last season, was a rock in the RCB middle order, accumulating 513 runs at a strike rate of 144.10 with an average of 42.75.

Glenn Maxwell has also spoken out about his part in the Australian T20 World Cup team. The 33-year-old hinted that he won’t bear all of the responsibility for the team’s achievement. He stated that he would aim to keep his IPL routines in place and play according to the situation, allowing the game to unfold naturally.
