In the absence of Pat Cummins, current Australian run-machine Marnus Labuschagne says stand-in skipper Steve Smith has handled the burden of guiding the team’very well.’
“Steve has handled it very well, it’s not new to him. It’s nice to see him in that leadership role. Thus, From a team dynamic, I don’t think anything has changed. It’s the first time he has captained me.” he said
So far, Smith has led the team from the front. Australia reached 473/9 declared thanks to the great cricketer’s patient 201-ball 93.
Labuschagne was definitely the star of the show for the home team. On Day Two of the 2nd Test, the No. 3 hitter smashed his sixth Test century. Throughout his innings, he rode his luck as England snatched a few of catches before being removed on a no-ball by Ollie Robinson.
Tim Paine
Smith was re-instated into the leadership group before the Ashes after Tim Paine resigned as Test captain. The previous skipper has been replaced with Cummins’ deputy. Smith took over as captain for only one Test when Cummins was ruled out of the Adelaide Test due to COVID-19 concerns.
Robinson eventually dismissed Labuschagne on 103 (305). In Test cricket, he now has the second-highest average of any batsman who has batted in at least 20 innings, averaging 62.48.
“It’s the first time I’d heard of it. A couple of nick off, you are right down the pecking order. I just think about scoring as many runs in each innings to try and also win the game. Winning games for Australia is by far the most enjoyable part.” he said
After reducing England to 17/2 at stumps on Day Two, Australia has put themselves in a strong position.
