Aakash Chopra criticised India for not declaring their second innings early on Day 4 of the Kanpur Test against New Zealand. He argued the decision cost India the chance to bowl out the visitors on Monday and win the match.
Despite having an almost insurmountable lead of 250 runs in the 71st over of the game, Indian hitters Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha took their time collecting runs over the next 10 overs. India eventually set a goal of 284 for New Zealand.

The visitors were only able to reach 165 on Day 5, but they were able to rescue a draw thanks to their last batting combination, Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel, who batted out the final few overs.
“They should have declared earlier, in my opinion. Could have declared earlier, could have accelerated a bit more. When you don’t do that, you generally regret that on the last day. he said
“That’s exactly what happened. You had runs but not the overs; one wicket was required and you couldn’t take that.” he added
Aakash Chopra also discussed the impact of this decision on India’s long-term aspirations in the World Test Championship (2021-23).
He stated that winning four WTC points in a home Test is “not good enough,” as any future series cancellation due to Covid might signal disaster for Virat Kohli’s team.
“This is the interesting thing about the World Test Championship that there are 12 points for a win, nothing for losses, six for a tie, and four for a draw. Aakash Chopra asserted
“If you are getting just four points in a Test at home, then with percentage points [system] you got just 33%. That’s not good enough because it’s possible that some series might get cancelled due to Covid, anything can happen. he added
In the inaugural World Tennis Championships (2019-21), where India finished second, Australia experienced a similar problem when their qualification was revoked due to an over-rate penalty.
