Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith has suggested that there may soon be only five or six countries playing Test cricket. He stated that the “big cricketing nations” are currently contributing to the longest – and oldest – format of the game, and that there will not be many competitive teams. His remarks come amid the rapid expansion of franchise-based T20 leagues around the world. South Africa and the United Arab Emirates have announced new T20 leagues that will begin next year.

“With Test cricket, it’s just iconic nations or big cricketing nations that are contributing to Test cricket right now,” Smith was quoted on Sky Sports by news agency PTI as saying.
“However, as long as we have competitive teams, you will not have 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14 competitive teams. There may only be five or six nations that play Test cricket at this level “He stated.
“The pressures on nations like New Zealand, the West Indies, and South Africa to stay financially sustainable in order to compete with England, India, and the world game are enormous,” he concluded.
Smith made his remarks on the third day of the first Test match between South Africa and England at Lord’s. South Africa won the three-match series 1-0 after defeating England by an innings and 12 runs.
Graeme Smith is the current commissioner of Cricket South Africa’s new T20 league, which has five franchises owned by IPL teams.
