In the midst of a national crisis, Sri Lanka withdraws from hosting the Asia Cup in 2022. The tournament will take place from August 27 to September 11.

Due to the ongoing political and economic crisis in the country. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has reportedly confirmed that it will not be able to host the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. SLC inform the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) of its inability to host the big event. Which was schedule to take place from August 27 to September 11.

Sri Lanka is experiencing its worst economic crisis in history, and the country has seen countless protests against the ruling government in recent months. Even eminent cricketers such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardene have spoken out about the worrying situation in the island nation.

Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka likely to consult UAE

“According to Sri Lankan media, the SLC informed the ACC of its decision, stating that it is ‘not in a position’ to organize the Asia Cup cricket tournament in the country due to the country’s current political and economic situation,” The Nation reported.

“A decision to hold the event in the United Arab Emirates has not yet been finalize,” the report continues. However, the location could be any Asian country, including India. Sri Lanka will reportedly consult with the UAE Cricket Board about providing a venue for the event.”

The decision comes just days after the highly anticipate third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) force to be postpone due to Sri Lanka’s ongoing crisis. It was suppose to start on August 21.

With Sri Lanka pulling out at the last minute, it remains to be seen which venue the ACC choose to host the tournament. Meanwhile, this year’s Asia Cup will play in T20 format as a warm-up for the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November. The tournament will play in a 20-over format for the second time, following 2016.
