Perry Goyal: From keeping wicket to overseeing hotel chain
Perry Goyal has been battling a different problem off the cricket pitch for the past decade. The Patiala native, who was a member of Virat Kohli’s 2008 World Cup-winning team, has been running his family’s real estate firm, which includes a hotel chain founded by his father Radhey Shyam Goyal. As a cricketer, you live a different life; and are often oblivious to what is going on in the rest of the world. It was a well-considered decision for me to retire from cricket. I had always believed that the goal should not simply be to get into any team; but to be able to play 50-100 games and when I couldn’t, I decided to leave.

As a cricketer, I am aware that I am playing while someone else is resting; and the same thing may happen to me. Shreevats was the first option wicket-keeper because he had fared well in previous competitions. Our coach, Dav Whatmore, said the same thing, which I understood. We also realized that the team’s victory was also ours. When my mother called, all she wanted to know was that I needed to bring the World Cup home; and she didn’t even inquire about my sister’s wedding.”

Through social media, Goyal keeps in touch with his 2008 colleagues. “I joined the then-Kings XI Punjab administration group in 2015; and amid the IPL, I experienced most of my U-19 colleagues. We all keep in touch by means of social media and share our cheerful times. We all backed Virat’s choice to take off the captaincy as of late.”
One memory from the U-19 victory jumps out for Goyal. Cricket gave me discipline, which has been really beneficial to me. I had brought an Indian flag to Malaysia with me. My favorite memory is waving the flag with my teammates after we won the trophy.”
