Former Team India selector Dilip Vengsarkar believes that having a split captaincy can benefit both Test captain Virat Kohli and white-ball captain Rohit Sharma. Virat Kohli was removed from the ODI captaincy by the Board of Control for Cricket in India earlier this week, with Rohit Sharma taking over full-time beginning with the next ODI series against South Africa. Kohli has previously stated that he will quit the T20 captaincy after the World Cup, but that he would continue to lead the squad in Tests and ODIs.
“I feel there will be no issue of having two power centers in the Indian dressing room. These are professional players after all and they will get on with the job at hand. As we see in England, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan are both doing well as Test and white-ball captains. So split captaincy can work for both Virat and Rohit as well,” Vengsarkar wrote
Vengsarkar, who rates Virat Kohli as one of the best batters in the world, believes the 33-year-old will be able to devote more time to Test cricket, which he considers to be the pinnacle form of the game.
“Virat has had a good run as captain of the Indian white-ball team and now the burden from his shoulders will be released 100 per cent. He is one of the best batsmen in the world at the moment. This will help him to concentrate more on Test cricket, which I feel is the ultimate form of cricket,” he added.
MS Dhoni
Anil Kumble was named Test captain early in Vengsarkar’s stint as the Indian team’s selector, while MS Dhoni was nurtured by the management to lead the team in the future.
Vengsarkar pointed out that the current management should also train someone young who can lead the squad to success in the future.
He believes that grooming young players will strengthen India’s bench, and that the newcomers will be able to adjust quickly and readily step in for senior players when they retire.
