Josh Hazlewood’s diving catch on Day 1 of the first Ashes Test ended Ollie Pope’s brave knock for England. For the baggy greens, Cameron Green took his first Test wicket.

Pope was on 35 runs when Green hit him with a short delivery. The ball was top-edged behind square leg by the English batter. From fine leg, Hazlewood sprinted a short distance to his left and dived at full stretch to hold on to the ball.

In his fifth match for Australia, Green was mobbed by his teammates. As they celebrated his first ever Test wicket.

As Australia’s pacers ran riot, it was a foreshadowing of things to come. In the fourth over, Josh Hazlewood dismissed Dawid Malan and claimed Joe Root in the next.

Ben Stokes appeared to be trying to keep the hosts at bay. However, Pat Cummins’ maiden wicket as Australia’s Test captain cut short his stay.

After that, Ollie Pope and Haseeb Hameed put up a 31-run partnership until Cummins had the latter edge one to Steve Smith in the slips.

As soon as Buttler stepped up to bat, he initiated a counter-offensive. During his 58-ball inning, he smacked five home runs and drove in 39 runs. Starc ultimately took him out, bringing an end to Buttler’s and Pope’s 52-run stand.

After Pope was defeated by Green, Cummins aided in the cleanup by convincing Ollie Robinson to give one to newcomer Alex Carey. With a short delivery, Cummins also got Mark Wood to catch the ball, which was collected by Marcus Harris at forward short leg.

Therefore, In his debut innings as Test captain, Pat Cummins took a five-wicket haul to dismiss England for 147 in 50.1 overs.
