Both Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane are national vice-captains in India’s white-ball and red-ball cricket teams, respectively. The duo, who have large reputations, have an unfavorable record against their names, one that is significant enough to bear the burden of Ajit Agarkar’s “Bombay Duck” moniker. We’ll get to that.
Ajit Agarkar of Mumbai joined the national squad as a bowling all-rounder in the late 1990s. He beat Dennis Lillee’s record and became the fastest bowler to 50 ODI wickets in his debut year of international cricket. When India’s Sachin Tendulkar-led team visited Australia in 1999-00, the country put its faith in the wiry young all-rounder.
Ajit Agarkar
The Indian team was thrashed 3-0. With 11 wickets at an average of 31.9, Ajit Agarkar was India’s most impressive bowler. But it was his batting that drew the most attention because of a tough feat he accomplished. In six innings, he had five ducks, including two pairs (one king pair).
When Australia visited India a year later, he bowled another pair in the Mumbai Test, making it seven ducks in a row against them. As a result, he gained the moniker “Bombay Duck.”
Therefore, Ajit Agarkar is not only India’s third-highest wicket-taker in ODIs. But he also owns the record for the fastest fifty by an Indian batsman in the format. Thus, He’s also the eighth Indian hitter to make a century at Lord’s. A feat only Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were able to accomplish at the end of their careers. Despite these achievements, he was nonetheless known as the “Bombay Duck.”
With Ajit Agarkar, both Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma have played cricket for Mumbai. In the Indian Premier League, both stalwarts have the most ducks (IPL).
