Ryan ten Doeschate sends out message to bowlers. The PBKS scripted history by achieving the highest successful chase in T20 cricket. Outplaying Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) formidable total of 261 at the Eden Gardens on Friday.
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) made history by completing the most successful chase in T20 cricket. Outscoring the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) formidable total of 261 at Eden Gardens on Friday, April 26. Following the record-breaking performance, KKR’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate urged his bowling unit to rise to the challenge and find innovative ways to counter the batting onslaught.
The ongoing IPL 2024 season has seen a batting revolution, with teams exceeding the 200-run mark on several occasions. In the most recent match, KKR scored a massive total thanks to blistering knocks from Sunil Narine (71 off 32) and Phil Salt (75 off 37).
However, Punjab openers Prabhsimran Singh (54 off 20) and Jonny Bairstow (108* off 48) got off to a great start, and Shashank Singh (68* off 28) joined the party to help PBKS reach the target with eight wickets and eight balls remaining.
Ten Doeschate acknowledged the difficult circumstances but urged the bowlers to find a way to counter the batting onslaught.
“There are two ways to look at it. You can take a step back and say, “Oh, it’s unfair; we are bowling machines,” or you can say, “We are going to find a way, we are going to be a point of difference compared to other teams,” “We are going to try new things,” and “We are going to embrace the challenge.” Yes, it will be difficult, but you must find innovative and new ways for the next four weeks at least; it (this season) will last that long, so there is no point crying about it,” Ten Doeschate said at the post-match press conference.

The impact player has had a big part: Ryan ten Doeschate
The Dutch all-rounder recognized the significance of the new ‘Impact Player’ rule, which has transformed batting strategies.
“The impact player has greatly influenced how the guys score. The game is almost unrecognizable from ten years ago, when if you got past 160, you could pack your bag and be confident that you had won. You now need 160 before the 13th over to reach a good score,” he added.
Ten Doeschate emphasized the importance for bowlers to think outside the box and constantly adapt their strategies.
“I set the off-side field, dragged him across, and fired one at the leg stump. You must come up with novel approaches. You need to keep changing, literally ball by ball. I don’t think you can bowl two balls the same way, and I don’t think you can bowl bowlers back to back unless they understand the game. It’s all in the batter’s favor, and the bowlers face a challenge in punching back,” he concluded.
