Despite initial scans ruling out fractures, further testing in Wellington found injury to his left thumb. Henry Nicholls will play the first Test in Conway’s absence, according to New Zealand Cricket.

The left-handed batter’s struggle against time to recover for the red-ball game results in him missing the first Test. Further evaluations are underway to determine the full degree of the injuries. An update from New Zealand Cricket is expect to determine Conway’s availability for the second Test. The setback for Conway underscored his importance as a batter for the Kiwis. The team hopes for a speedy recovery and return to the playing XI.

“It’s disappointing that Devon has been ruled out on the eve of an important match. He’s an excellent player who bats at the top of the order for us, and I know he was looking forward to this series. It’s great to have a player like Henry to call on. “He has plenty of Test experience and can play in a variety of positions in our batting order. ” Said Gary Stead, as quoted by the Hindustan Times.
