Former India pacer Zaheer Khan believes New Zealand’s side was underprepared to perform in India’s spin-friendly conditions. The Blackcaps were defeated by a massive 372-run margin in the second Test, losing the series 1-0.
New Zealand fell behind early in the second Test and battled on a wicket that has been turning since Day 1. They were dismissed for 62, the lowest Test total ever recorded in India.
Over the course of the series, Zaheer observed that the bowling assault was frequently. That is led by a single bowler who lacked support from the others.
“New Zealand, while competing in Indian conditions were not at their best, they lacked something. They did not have support in the bowling department, then Williamson was not there in the second Test. New Zealand did not have the resources to compete in India. But you could not underestimate this team because they came here after winning the WTC. This is a team that always finds a way in any condition.” he said
New Zealand will welcome Bangladesh for a two-match Test series in their home country.
Jayant Yadav
After a quick spell from Jayant Yadav helped the team win in just over 11 overs, Zaheer believes the 31-year-old gives the squad with greater tactical versatility. He suggested that if the opposition’s batting unit contains more left-handers, two off-spinners might be used.
“It was a matter of when for India today, Jayant Yadav bowled a brilliant spell, looked in a great rhythm. Both off-spinners picking 4 wickets is a positive in terms of the future. In the current template, where 5 bowlers play. There is a tactical option where you have 2 attacking left-arm spinners in Jadeja and Axar. Now there is this option where you can play Ashwin and Jayant if the opposition has quite a few left-handed batsmen.” Zaheer added
Such a tactical experiment is most likely to be carried out just at home. For overseas tours, the squad plans to stick with their one-spinner strategy, which has shown to be very successful in England.
