Aaron Finch has disclosed that, unlike many others in the cricketing world. He projected David Warner as Player of the Tournament months before the T20 World Cup 2021. On Sunday, the Australian captain told head coach Justin Langer that he had assured him of the same, praising Warner as a “all-time great.”
David Warner entered the event after a tumultuous IPL season in which he was dismissed as captain and dropped twice.
With increased backing from the Australian management, the southpaw rediscovered his greatest form. Scoring 236 runs in six games, second best in the championship. The contribution was critical in Australia’s eight-wicket victory over New Zealand on Sunday. Which gave them their first men’s T20 World Cup title.
Aaron Finch revealed in the post-match news conference that while he preferred leg-spinner Adam Zampa to win the award, he was not surprised to see David Warner win it.
Adam Zampa
“You didn’t expect that? I certainly did. Without a word of a lie, I promise you, I called Justin Langer a few months ago and I said, ‘Don’t worry about Davey. He’ll be the Man of the Tournament.’ I thought Adam Zampa should have been Man of the Tournament, personally, but he’s a great player. He’s one of the all-time great batters and he’s a fighter. He’s someone when his back is against the wall, that’s when you get the very, very best of David Warner. It was a special finish of the tournament for him, the last couple of knocks.” Aaron Finch said
The hitters’ problems against leg-spin were arguably Australia’s sole blemish in this near-flawless tournament victory. Aaron Finch commented later in the conference about how his squad saw the problem and worked to address it throughout the tournament.
