Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg has detailed how the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were able to get the most out of Glenn Maxwell in the upcoming IPL 2021. After a tumultuous run in the last several editions of the event, the all-rounder has finally regained his form.
In the previous IPL season, Glenn Maxwell set a new low by failing to smash a single six. Maxwell was scooped up by RCB in the ensuing auction for a whopping 14 crore after his second tenure with the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) ended in disaster. Maxwell’s services were acquired after a bidding war with Chennai Super Kings.
RCB’s decision to give Glenn Maxwell a distinct role at No. 4 in the batting order, according to Brad Hogg, has greatly enhanced the Australian’s hitting performance. In the previous edition of the IPL, RCB had difficulty accelerating in the middle overs, but Maxwell’s addition has helped the situation.
“Only a quarter of his scores were below 20 in 2021. He’s been assigned a specific position at RCB, batting at No. 4 and coming in at the latter end of the powerplay, when spin usually comes on, and he’s a great spinner, so they needed someone to attack the spinners there.”
Maxwell has four fifties in his No. 4 batting position and only needs one more to tie Rishabh Pant’s record set in 2018.
Glenn Maxwell
The impact of the batting unit around Glenn Maxwell was also mentioned by Hogg. Maxwell has the luxury of taking his time in the middle overs because he is surrounded by a talented batting order that includes Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, KS Bharat, and AB de Villiers. In order to increase the tempo, the Australian does not need to risk losing his wicket.
