Has the element of luck in winning or losing the toss grown far too important; in the trade-off between luck and skill? Winning the toss and electing to bat second increases your chances; of winning by as much as 40% in the IPL. Over the last six years, the team batting first has won only 150 of the 364 matches; played in the IPL, while the side batting second has won 214. “The dew factor is also essential,” explains S Rajesh, ESPNCricinfo’s Stats Editor. “If you look at the last several seasons, especially 2019 and 2021; the team bowling first has had a distinct advantage. They can bowl a drier ball for the first five or seven overs.” The importance of the toss is reflected in the betting odds (in England); for each match: if a side wins the toss, their chances of winning increase by at least 10%. For example, if Team A vs. Team B’s likelihood of winning is 55 percent : 45 percent before the toss; and Team B wins the toss, the chances shift to 45 percent : 55 percent. Alternatively, if Team B wins the toss and the chances are 65 percent to 35 percent before the match; the odds shift to 55 percent to 45 percent. “Bumrah-Vumrah Kya Karenge,” says ex-RCB player Virat Kohli, recalling a 2014 conversation. Jasprit Bumrah, a fast bowler, rose to prominence early in his career thanks to outstanding performances; for the Mumbai Indians of the Indian Premier League (IPL) (MI). Bumrah, on the other hand, could have had a different outcome. In an interview with Virender Sehwag on Cricbuzz, former India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB); batsman Parthiv Patel lauded Bumrah and explained his difficult ascent in domestic and international cricket. Parthiv then said that while he was with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014; he told Virat Kohli about Bumrah and requested him to take a look at the fast bowler; but the then-RCB captain dismissed his request. “When I was with RCB in 2014, I informed Virat that there is a bowler named Bumrah who should be seen. ‘Chord na yaar, ye Bumrah-Vumrah kya karenge?’ came the reply from his end.” Cricbuzz claimed Parthiv Patel.
