Pragyan Ojha says “India have to find the right pace that will get the most out of this wicket” in India vs New Zealand

Pragyan Ojha, a left-arm spinner, emphasised the importance of changing the tempo and finding the right range to get wickets on the fifth day of the first Test match. At Kanpur, the final-day pitch was lifeless, with little help for the bowlers.

Towards the close of the previous day’s play, the pitch began to come alive. The overnight duo of Tom Latham and William Somerville, on the other hand, cruised through the opening session. When a new batsman takes the crease, everything could change, according to Ojha. After lunch, Somerville left for the first delivery.

“India bowled really well but they have to find the right pace that will get the most out of this wicket. We saw that when the spinners were varying their pace. The wicket was behaving when compared to bowling at a similar pace throughout. This is such a pitch where nothing seems to be happening when set batsmen are playing. But all of a sudden it looks like it is doing something when a new batsman plays.” Ojha said

The Indian bowling outfit, particularly the spinners. It have held the run rate in check but have failed to produce wicket-taking opportunities.

In the opening session of the last day, New Zealand did not lose a single wicket. After lunch, they lost one wicket and are now batting at 107 for the loss of two wickets. This suggests that any of the three outcomes is still feasible.

“First session is usually played cautiously so that the platform is set. But the second session would be interesting because NZ batsmen will try to score runs as well because the win will be back on their minds. When intent changes, the game changes.” Ojha added

They’ll need 177 runs spread out over two sessions. On the last day, a minimum of 91 overs are scheduled to be bowled, but the dwindling light in Kanpur at the close of the day’s play spoilsport.
