His international career ended prematurely when South Africa was barred from international cricket due to its apartheid regime. Prior to the ban, the 77-year-old played seven Tests, six of which South Africa won, all against Australia.
His fast-bowling heroics brought him a lot of attention, as he took 41 wickets at an average of 15.02 in seven Tests. While he did not reach a half-century in international cricket, Procter scored numerous notable runs in first-class and List A matches.
He played 401 first-class matches over 24 years, scoring 21,936 runs at an average of 36.01. His greatest score of 254 was against Western Province in 1971, while playing for Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Throughout his successful career, Procter accumulated 48 centuries and 109 half-centuries. Between 1970 and 1971, the right-handed batter smashed six centuries for Rhodesia. He also played for Gloucestershire for 14 seasons, captaining the team five times. Procter went on to become a legend for the county side.
With the ball, he took 1,417 first-class wickets at 19.53. He took 70 five-wicket hauls and had the best innings stats of 9/71. Procter played 271 List A cricket matches, scoring 6,624 runs at an average of 27.94. He also took 344 wickets at an impressive average of 18.76. After South Africa was reintroduced in international cricket, Procter coached the team to a semi-final spot in the 1992 ODI World Cup.
