Ireland name squad for Afghanistan series. All of the series’ matches will be played in the UAE.
Ireland has called up uncapped bowler Matthew Foster for the forthcoming one-off Test series against Afghanistan, which will begin on February 28. Barry McCarthy, Theo van Woerkom, and Craig Young, who have been there for a while. May get their first caps, as Andrew Balbrnie leads the side in the longest format.
The one-off Test, the two teams will play three ODI and T20I matches.
All of the series’ matches will be played in the United Arab Emirates. Paul Stirling designated captain for the white-ball leg.
Meanwhile, Ireland selector Andrew White believes the side to perform well because all of the players are accustomed with the circumstances in the UAE. He expects the team to be confident following their recent triumphs in Zimbabwe. As the series would serve as a solid preparation for the T20 World Cup, which begins on June 1.
“We’ve played a lot of cricket in this region of the world over the previous decade, so the players should be comfortable with the conditions. While there has been a 12-week gap, the players should bring some confidence and energy into this series after a good tour of Zimbabwe in December,” White told the BBC.
“Preparations are going well; the squad had a solid training camp in Spain last week, and we will send the players to the UAE five days before the upcoming series to acclimate and train in Middle Eastern conditions.” This series is vital in our preparations for a busy summer, which includes the T20 World Cup. This is always a highly anticipated contest, and I expect it to be a hard-fought series, which I am looking forward to,” he said.
