On Wednesday, the West Indies announced their 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. Nicholas Pooran will captain the team, with Rovman Powell serving as his deputy. The announcement was also surprising because some big names were missing, including all-rounder Andre Russell and spin king Sunil Narine. CWI chief selector Desmond Haynes explained Russell’s exclusion, stating that the board not convince by Russell’s performances and form.
“Earlier this year, we met with Andre Russell. We’re still not convince; he’s not performing as well as we’d like to see him perform in the competition (CPL). Russell represented the West Indies in last year’s T20 World Cup.
The big-hitting all-rounder has had a quiet start to the CPL 2022 season with Trinbago Knight Riders, averaging just 17 runs per game.
Concerning Narine, Haynes stated that he received no notice from the spinner regarding his availability and that he appeared uninterested.
