Punjab Kings release Wasim Jaffer from backroom staff ahead of upcoming season. Sanjay Bangar’s role will double following Jaffer’s release.
A major development has occurred for Punjab Kings ahead of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise recently announced that former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer has been released from his position as batting consultant in their backroom staff.
Jaffer joined the team in 2023 as batting coach under Trevor Bayliss. However, PBKS now has Sanjay Bangar as its cricket director. It is worth noting that Bangar has previously served as India’s batting coach, and he will do the same for PBKS, eliminating the need for Jaffer.
Prior to the start of the IPL 2023, the Punjab Kings made several changes to their staff, including the appointment of Bayliss as head coach, replacing Anil Kumble. Furthermore, the franchise hired Charl Langeveldt and Brad Haddin as bowling and assistant coach, respectively.

Punjab Kings still in search for maiden IPL title
The Punjab Kings had a very bad IPL season in 2023. The team did not advance to the tournament’s knockout stages and was eliminated in the group stage. Kings competed in 14 games, winning six of them and losing the other eight.
They finished eighth in the standings with 12 points in 14 matches, and they will hope that the 17th edition of the IPL is different for them. It is worth noting that the Punjab Kings have only made it to the IPL finals once, in 2014, and once in the knockout rounds, in 2008.
As the new season approaches, the Punjab Kings will be hoping for a strong performance. Jonny Bairstow, England’s wicketkeeper batter, will reportedly be available for selection, and with several other stars in their lineup, the Kings will hope to perform well in the IPL 2024.
