Joe Root, the England cricket team’s charismatic batter, has defended his controversial reverse-scoop shot. Which has sparked criticism during the current Test series against India. Despite the criticism, Root remains committed to the positive and aggressive approach taken by captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
The incident occurred during the third Test in Rajkot, when Root was dismissed for a reverse scoop, triggering England’s batting collapse. The shot was heavily criticised, with former cricketers and experts questioning the timing and necessity of such a daring stroke.
However, his subsequent innings of 122 runs in Ranchi demonstrated a return to form. Root’s recent statements demonstrate his defence against criticism. He acknowledges the differing opinions on his shot selection but remains confident in his playing style. Despite averaging only 12.83 prior to the fourth Test, Root’s determination to contribute to the team’s success remains unwavering.]

‘I have high expectations of myself’ – Joe Root
In an interview with Sky Sports, Root addressed the criticism head on, saying, “People will have their own opinions on how I’ve come out of this series.
He is convince that his evolution as a batter and constant adaptation have been critical to his success. He has no intention of remaining stagnant.
“I have high expectations of myself, and until that last Test match, I was far from where I want to be; I will continue to play the way I believe is best for any given situation. “No one understands my game like I do,” he added.
Root’s justification for the controversial shot was based on the team’s aggressive attitude. “I tried to simply play the game in front of me. I looked at the situation and the conditions in Ranchi, and there was no need for anything flamboyant. It required someone to be consistent throughout and maintain a calm demeanor,” the cricketer said.
With India missing a bowler due to Ravichandran Ashwin’s withdrawal, Root saw an opportunity to seize control and put pressure on the opposition.
“It could have completely changed the complexion of that morning, with India missing a bowler. There has been a lot of talk about Ashwin not being there and seeing off Bumrah.” But if Bumrah bowls four an over in that spell, they’ll have one less bowler to rely on, and we’ll be able to get ahead of the game even faster on a potentially deteriorating wicket, putting more pressure on India,” he said.
England is 3-1 down in the five-match Test series against India. Final Test schedule to begin on March 7th in Dharamsala. The visitors will look to end the series on a high note by winning the upcoming Test.
