Sunil Gavaskar has named Shubman Gill and Axar Patel as potential captains of India. The appointment of Ajinkya Rahane as Test vice-captain for the West Indies series has spark a new round of debate in India.
The reappointment of Ajinkya Rahane as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies has aroused some questions. A couple of former cricketers have stated that the squad is not cultivating any future potential leaders. Which could have an impact on the national team in the future. In the meantime, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Shubman Gill and Axar Patel can lead the national team in the coming years.
Notably, Axar was just name vice-captain of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, whilst Gill has no prior leadership experience. He was the vice-captain of the Indian squad at the U-19 level. He didn’t play a large part because then-coaches Rahul Dravid and Prithvi Shaw were in charge of making decisions. Meanwhile, Gavaskar noted that stumper-batter Ishan Kishan can also join the leadership race. First he must establish himself in the starting XI.
“One is Shubman Gill and the other is Axar Patel [as future captains], because Axar is improving by leaps and bounds with each match.” Giving him the role of vice-captain will force them to think. So, in my opinion, these are the two choices. If there are others, such as Ishan Kishan, once he has established himself in the team. “He can also be consider,” Gavaskar state in an interview with Sports Today.

There’s nothing wrong with Rahane becoming the vice-captain, but it’s a squandered opportunity to develop a young player: Gavaskar
The former cricketer went on to say that while there is nothing wrong with giving Ajinkya Rahane the baton in the longest format of the game. He believes that a younger player could have been fostered in the meantime. He also state that the team’s management should sit down with some of the players and inform them that they have the potential to lead India in the future.
“There’s nothing wrong with him (Ajinkya Rahane) being the vice-captain. It’s a miss opportunity to develop a young player.” Tell a young player that you are being considered for captaincy. As a result, he begins to consider himself as a potential leader,” Gavaskar added.
