Paras Mhambrey gives his take on India’s Day 1 performance. After the first day of the WTC final, Australia had reached 327 runs with three wickets down.
The Indian side won the toss and chose to bowl first against Australia’s Pat Cummins-led squad on Day 1 of the World Test Championship final. Following a few early breakthroughs, India was treated to lethal knocks hammered by Travis Head and Steve Smith, putting the Aussies in command.
After losing three wickets for 76 runs, Smith and Head counterattacked India’s bowling team, and by the conclusion of day 1, Smith was unbeaten on 95 runs in 227 balls, while Head was unbeaten on 146* runs in 156 balls. Following the poor performance of the Indian bowlers, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey stated that the bowlers lacked discipline and allowed more than they would have liked.
“We could have been a little more disciplined in terms of bowling.” We got off to a great start. We bowled in the appropriate locations in the opening 12-13 overs. But maybe we weren’t as strict with our bowling after that. “We gave up a little more than we would have liked,” India Today cited Paras Mhambrey as saying.
“The pitch did well in the morning. The first hour was a tad erratic. “As the day progressed, the pitch became flatter than we had anticipated,” he remarked.
Tomorrow morning is very important for us: Mhambrey
Furthermore, despite India’s predicament, Mhambrey is upbeat as the second day of the WTC final approaches. He also believes that the early stages of day 2 might be critical for India, as they will be looking for early wickets.
“What’s the harm?” (Can India recover?) I believed the pitch and circumstances improved. We used the second new ball, and there was some seam and pitch movement after that. Tomorrow morning is crucial for us. “We definitely have a chance to get back into the game if we get one or two early wickets,” Mhambrey added.
