Sunil Gavaskar on taking MS Dhoni’s autograph in Chennai. “I was fortunate enough that someone in the camera unit had a marker pen,” Gavaskar explained.
MS Dhoni left an indelible imprint on the minds of not only fans, but even legends of the game. The world experienced something similar during Chennai Super Kings’ final league game at home. The entire cricket community was riveted when great Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar took the autograph of CSK captain MS Dhoni on his shirt.
Cricket fans were ecstatic as they saw the spectacular moments play on their television screens, as a veteran of the game acted like a fan in front of the other, who was half his age.

Sunil Gavaskar stated the reason for his impetuous action from the Star Sports Studio.
“When I found out that Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni were going to take a lap of honour at Chepauk, I decided to make a special memory,” Sunil Gavaskar remarked. That’s why I dashed over to MSD to get his autograph. It was his final game at Chepauk. Of course, if CSK makes the playoffs, he’ll get an opportunity to play here. But I resolved to make that experience memorable. I was fortunate enough to find a marking pen in the camera unit. As a result, I am grateful to that individual as well.”
“So, I went to Mahi and requested him to sign an autograph on the shirt that I was wearing,” a tearful Gavaskar later recounted. It was quite thoughtful of him to mention it. It was an emotional time for me because this individual has made significant contributions to Indian cricket.”
An emotional Gavaskar went on to share the two most important events in his cricket career that he will remember for the rest of his life.
“The two cricketing moments I would like to see before I die are Kapil Dev lifting the 1983 World Cup Trophy and MS Dhoni hitting that winning six in the 2011 World Cup final.”
