Many expected him to join the Indian Test team. His name was nowhere to be seen when the BCCI released the roster for the first two Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests. In an interview, BCCI selector Sridharan Sharath detailed the reasons for Sarfaraz’s exclusion.
The national selector emphasized the importance of squad composition and balance while selecting players for the national team. He remarked that there is no question that Sarfaraz is a wonderful batter, but players are picked depending on the needs of the squad.
