  Kabul, Dec 20: Women are banned from private and public universities in Afghanistan with immediate effect and until further notice, a Taliban government spokesman said Tuesday, the latest edict cracking down on their rights and freedoms.

  The decision was announced after a meeting of the Taliban government.

  They have banned girls from middle school and high school, restricted women from most employment and ordered them to wear head-to-toe clothing in public. Women are also banned from parks and gyms.

  A letter shared by the spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education, Ziaullah Hashmi, tells private and public universities to implement the ban as soon as possible and to inform the ministry once the ban is in place.

  Hashmi also tweeted the letter from his account and confirmed its contents in a message to The Associated Press.

  The university ban comes weeks after Afghan girls took their high school graduation exams, even though they have been banned from classrooms since the Taliban took over the country last year.

  Hyderabad: The Commissioner’s Task Force (West) on Monday caught three persons who were organising cricket betting and seized Rs 14,310 and seven mobile phones from them.

  Acting on a tip off, the team caught Ashish Singh, Parmesh Singh and Vijay Singh, all residents of Mangalhat. who were organising online betting at Bada Bungalow in Mangalhat. The three were handed over to the Mangalhat police for further action. One suspect, Vishnu Singh, is absconding.

  Hyderabad:?The Rachakonda Police Special Operations Team (LB Nagar) busted a cricket betting racket and caught five persons at Vanasthalipuram on Saturday. The police seized Rs 12.50 lakh and issued orders to freeze eight bank accounts that had Rs 96.78 lakh.

  The arrested persons were identified as Devineni Chakravarthy of Autonagar, Vemulaparthy Harish of Mansoorabad, Chenreddy Suresh Reddy of Saroornagar, Saama Jaipal Reddy and Shaik Asif Pasha, both from Vanasthalipuram. Two others, Appala Raju of Bheemavaram and N Srinivasa Uday Kumar of East Godavari were absconding.

  Acting on a tip-off, the team raided a house in Autonagar and caught Chakravarthy, who was organising online betting along with Appala Raju and Uday Kumar in the two Telugu States, Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said, adding that to misguide the police, Appala Raju had opened two current accounts in the names of Sri Venkateshwara Traders and Sri Lalitha Durga Traders.

  After the raid, the police found the organisers operating eight bank accounts and accepting payments online. Orders have then been issued to the banks to freeze these accounts, Bhagwat said.
