Pat Cummins Appointed Australia’s New ODI Captain. Cricket Australia confirmed the selection of bowler Pat Cummins as the new ODI skipper on Tuesday.
Pat Cummins, Australia’s Test captain, named one-day captain on Tuesday. After Aaron Finch withdrew from the 50-over format, with the fast bowler noting he had “big shoes to fill. ” Cummins, 29, will captain the team to the ODI World Cup in India next year. “I’ve had a great experience playing under Finchy and have learned a lot from his leadership,” Cummins said of his long-time teammate.
“They are large shoes to fill, but we are really lucky to have a one-day squad with a wealth of experience.”

After a dismal run of form, opener Aaron Finch withdrew from ODIs last month.
He remains captain of the Twenty20 squad, which begins its World Cup defense against New Zealand in Sydney on Saturday.
Alex Carey, Steve Smith, and Mitchell Marsh were all considered candidates for the position.
There have also been calls for David Warner to be considered, despite his lifetime leadership ban as a result of a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018.
“We are very lucky to have a lot of high-quality leaders and senior players across all forms,” said Ben Oliver, head of Cricket Australia’s national teams.
“The board and selectors think Pat is the best candidate to lead the ODI squad into the next phase, which includes the World Cup in 2023.”
Cummins took over as Test captain last year when Tim Paine resigned on the eve of the Ashes against England due to a sexting incident, and he has been generally praised for his cool leadership.
