‘I don’t agree that we played conservative cricket,’ Rohit Sharma says of India’s T20 World Cup performance in 2021. “Just because we didn’t get a result in the World Cup doesn’t mean we were playing bad cricket,” Rohit explained.
Before the upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies, India captain Rohit Sharma denied playing a conservative brand of cricket in the T20 World Cup last year. After two consecutive defeats, India failed to advance to the knockout stages, and they were heavily criticized, particularly the batters.
However, under Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid’s leadership, India has not lost a T20I series until the recent England series, and they have also chosen to bat more aggressively. Despite losing an odd game, India’s strategy has been quite effective.
Rohit clarified that India did not play bad or conservative cricket in the T20 World Cup in 2021, and he denied that India did not take any risks. He mentioned India’s successful run leading up to the World Cup and questioned whether a conservative approach would produce similar results.

The fact that we did not win the World Cup does not imply that we played poorly: Rohit Sharma
“Just because we didn’t get a result in the World Cup doesn’t mean we were playing bad cricket.” And I disagree that we played conservative cricket. If you lose 1-2 games in the World Cup, it appears that you did not take risks. Looking back at the games we played prior to the World Cup, we won 80 percent of them. “I don’t understand how you can win so many matches while being so conservative,” Rohit said.
“We lost the World Cup, but anything is possible.” That didn’t happen because we weren’t playing freely. We haven’t changed anything drastically recently; we’ve simply given players more freedom to express themselves. “Performances will emerge if you play freely,” he added.
Rohit also stated that it is critical to understand that the team has been trying something new, and thus mistakes are unavoidable.
“Those on the outside should keep the peace; the way we’re playing cricket, there will be failures, and the results may not go our way, but that’s okay because we’re trying something new.” It is possible for mistakes to occur, but this does not imply that the players are inept. “Everyone has to change with time; we are changing, so people on the outside must also change,” he said.
