The Asian Cricket Council has placed Bangladesh on standby to host the Asia Cup. Which is scheduled to start in August, despite Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) having demonstrated its readiness to host the event. This is because the political unrest in the country is unpredictable.
Later this month, the ACC will make a final decision, and everyone will have a better understanding of the situation. Recently, SLC hosted both the Indian Women’s team for a white-ball series consisting of three T20Is. And as many ODIs as well as the Australian Men’s team for a multi-format series that included three T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests.
According to a report by the Indian Express. The ACC wants to play it safe in this situation in case the situation in Sri Lanka gets worse. After Sri Lankan citizens broke into the President’s home and also set the Prime Minister’s house on fire, the country’s leaders recently announced their willingness to resign.
In fact, during the most recent test match between Sri Lanka and Australia, angry protesters nearly reached the field when they scaled the Galle Fort to demand the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for mismanaging the country’s economy.

The Asia Cup group’s vacant sixth spot
This year’s Asia Cup will feature six nations, with Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh already securing five of the spots. Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuwait, UAE, and Singapore will compete for the final spot at the mega event. To advance to the final six, the four nations will compete in a qualifying tournament. For those nations that will go on to compete in the T20 World Cup in Australia this year, the Asia Cup will be a huge boost.
