The draft is expect to take place in the coming months, with the BBL 12 set to begin in December. The draft system requires each team to select a minimum of two and a maximum of three players.

According to the Australian cricket board, while the draft is intend to attract the best available foreign players. The overall goal is to give the BBL a more competitive edge in the international market. As well as to provide new opportunities to the teams participating in the competition.
CA also state that the draft order will be determine by a weight lottery system. The three teams that did not make the BBL 11 finals being entered first to determine the first three selections.
There will be four categories, and players nominated in four rounds: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, with the Platinum Group receiving the highest pay.
