Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23 runs on Tuesday to open their account within the 15th IPL. Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa’s eminent strokeplay was coordinated by a stellar execution from the spinners. When given the opportunity to bat, Dube (95 not out) and Uthappa (88 off 50 balls) created commanding; unbeaten half-centuries, crushing 17 sixes and nine fours between them en course to a 165-run third-wicket; stand — the most elevated for the third wicket within the league and the most elevated; of the season — to assist CSK reach a commanding 216 for 4. In reply, RCB were bowled out for 193 runs, with rookie spinner Maheesh Theekshana (4/33); and skipper Ravindra Jadeja (3/39) combining for seven wickets in CSK’s 200th IPL match.

The reigning champions ended a four-match losing record with this victory; while Bangalore suffered only their second loss in five matches.

Within the first five overs, RCB lost captain Faf du Plessis (8), who became Theekshana’s first victim; and star batsman Virat Kohli (1), who was dismissed by Mukesh Choudhary.

Anuj Rawat (12), who was in fine form, was caught in front of the wicket by Theekshana; during the power play.

The 21-year-old Sri Lankan spinner, who was selected for Rs 70 lakh in the big auction; then dismissed debutant Suyash Prabhudessai (34) and Shahbaz Ahmed (41); who attempted to take the game to a new level with a rapid 60-run stand off 33 balls.

Theekshana castled Prabhudessai after the ball sailed past the inside edge and through the middle stump; and then dismissed Ahmed with the carrom ball to complete a match-winning spell under the lights.

Dube and Uthappa feasted on the RCB onslaught in the beginning, blasting dazzling half-centuries.

Earlier, after being given the opportunity to bat, Uthappa and Dube demonstrated their six-hitting; skills by rallying the innings after CSK were down to 36 for 2.

While Uthappa’s innings featured nine sixes and four boundaries, Dube’s unbeaten 46-ball innings featured eight sixes and five fours. Both Dube and Uthappa recorded their greatest IPL scores to set up the match; for reigning champions CSK, who have lost four consecutive games and have yet to win this season.

Uthappa took his time settling in, scoring his first boundary in the fifth over off Mohammed Siraj (0/37), before clobbering Akash Deep (0/58) for his maiden maximum in the next over.

The lanky left-handed hitter then launched into Glenn Maxwell (0/29) for his first six over long-on, and Uthappa and Dube increased the ante by hammering a boundary each off Deep.

The devastation began in the 11th over, when the duo went toe-to-toe, and CSK cruised to 133 for 2 in the 15th over, with 73 runs coming in the first five overs.

In the 11th over, Dube was harsh on Wanindu Hasaranga (2/35), who bled 13 runs.

As CSK amassed 19 runs within the 13th over, Uthappa and Dube saved no bowler, with the previous hitting three sixes off Maxwell. Continuing the attack, the duo rebuffed Profound within the 15th over, where boundaries and sixes were aplenty.

For his fifty, Uthappa ventured up his assault and went after Siraj, hitting him for two sixes and a four within the 17th over, which yielded 18 runs. Deep fell casualty to Dube’s anger once more within the 18th over, giving up two sixes and a boundary as 200 showed up to be on the cards. Within the 18th over, Profound spilled 24 runs.

Uthappa fell in the penultimate over of the innings, which yielded 14 runs, and Dube added to the bowling team’s misery by hitting two sixes in the final over to conclude the innings in style.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (17) and Moeen Ali (3) were both easily lost by CSK. The show was thereafter taken over by Uthappa and Dube. Harshal Patel, who had left the bio-bubble following the death of his sister on Saturday, was sorely missed by RCB
