Valencia holds Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Copa semifinals.
Athletic Bilbao was beaten to a 1-1 draw at home against Valencia in the first leg of the semifinals; as it attempted to reach its third consecutive Copa del Rey final. Raul Garcia gave the hosts the lead in the 37th minute with a header from an Iker Muniain free kick; but Hugo Duro equalized for Valencia in the 65th minute with a close-range goal off the rebound of a Bryan Gil shot.
The second match will take place on March 2 at Mestalla Stadium in Valencia. On Wednesday, Real Betis beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in the first leg of the other semifinal. Athletic fell to Real Sociedad of the Basque Country; in the final in 2020 and to Barcelona in the final last season. With 23 titles to Barcelona’s 31, it is the competition’s second most successful club; but it hasn’t won the trophy since 1984.
Athletic has as of late been one of Spain’s most smoking groups; having dispensed with Barcelona within the Copa del Rey’s final 16 and Genuine Madrid within the quarterfinals.
