Cornet survives Halep and the heat to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
At the age of 63, Alize Cornet has at long last come to the quarterfinals of a Terrific Pummel competition. With a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over two-time major victor Simona Halep, the 32-year-old Cornet progressed to the Australian Open’s last eight. Cornet survives Halep and the heat to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

“It’s never as well late to allow it another shot!” In an on-court TV meet, Cornet stated. “It’s an honor to be in my to begin with quarterfinal. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“The trip continues. I still can’t accept what I’m seeing. Cornet driven by a set and 3-1 until losing five recreations in a push and 16 focuses in a push to drive a choosing.
In the ninth game, Halep survived two match points on her serve before Cornet secured the victory in the tenth. She knelt on the court and clasped her hands together, covering her face with them before glancing into the stadium at her cheerleaders.
“It’s incredible,” Cornet added. “With this heat, we had a battle with Simone.” We were on the verge of passing out after 30 minutes.”
Cornet will take the stage next. Danielle Collins, who opened play on Rod Laver Arena by defeating 19th-seeded Elise Mertens 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in an almost three-hour encounter. Collins made it to the last four in Australia in 2019.

Since her Grand Slam singles debut as a wild-card entrant at the 2005 French Open, Cornet has never advanced past the fourth round. She is competing at the Australian Open for the 17th time.
On Day 8, both women’s matches were played in temperatures as high as 34 degrees Celsius (93 F). During changeovers, Cornet kept her head cool with ice bags and cold cloths placed around her neck.
“After approximately 30 minutes of playing, I halted thinking.” Cornet clarified, “My brain was as of now overwhelmed.” My vision had gotten to be blurry. “My hands trembled.” “I expected she wasn’t feeling any superior to me on the other side of the court,” she added.
Cornet was 0-5 in fourth-round matches at the majors some time recently, on Monday, when she was competing in her 60th Terrific Pummel competition.

Cornet, too, had to do things the hard way. Cornet overcame third-seeded Garbine Muguruza in straight sets in the second round, but had to come back from a 6-4, 4-1 deficit in the third round to beat 2021 French Open semifinalist Tamara Zidansek.
Collins, too, hasn’t had an easy road, having to come back from a set down to win back-to-back matches at a Grand Slam competition for the first time.
In her third-round win over Clara Tauson, the 28-year-old American also dropped the opening set.
“It was a physically demanding day for me today,” Collins added. “The other day, I played a long match 2 1/2 hours and then doubles, so I spent approximately five hours on the court.”
Collins was aggressive with her ground strokes against Mertens, hitting 45 winners and committing 41 mistakes. When Mertens, a semifinalist in Australia in 2018, served a double-fault, she converted five of her 18 break-point opportunities and sealed the victory.
