S. Halep advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open on Saturday; capping off a dreadful start to the season with a 6-2 6-1 thrashing of Montenegrin debutante Danka Kovinic.
On a scorching hot day at John Cain Field, the 14th seeded Romanian completely outflanked Kovinic; who had just thrown out U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu, becoming her country’s first player to get to the third round; of an Incredible Pound singles competition.
She is back in good shape after missing Wimbledon and the French Open in 2021 due to injury.
In addition, she won eight consecutive matches, including a warm-up competition in Melbourne.
“It’s amazing to be able to play the fourth round again,” said Halep; who was eliminated in the quarter-finals last year by Serena Williams. “It’s always a pleasure to perform in front of this crowd; so thank you all for sticking it out in this heat, because it’s scorching today.”

“Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion who reached the final at Melbourne Park in 2018; will face Alize Cornet of France in the quarter-finals.
“I think I played really well, (Kovinic) was a little; tired since she had a tough match before me,” Halep remarked.
“I feel fantastic, more confidence now after a difficult year last year; and now I just enjoy playing tennis because I’m healthy.”
