ISL: With a blend of beauty and guile, Sahal Abdul Samad comes of age
Tipped to be another enormous thing in Indian football, the UAE-born midfielder is; at final, advocating his potential with a string of match-winning exhibitions for Kerala Blasters.
From midfield, the run was not in a straight line. But, on the other hand, that’s how the smarter players handle their off-the-ball sprinting.
In the eyes of the Jamshedpur FC defence, Sahal Abdul Samad; was not the centre of focus, but he was causing all sorts of issues for his left-flank marker. As Kerala Blasters’ Alvaro Vazquez grabbed the ball in the centre circle; and began advancing goalwards, Sahal began his own run on the right flank. He cut in quickly, then moved deeper to the wing and into a more central position. Then to the pitch’s edge once more. Vazquez had the two centre backs and midfield cover after him; but Sahal’s off-the-ball, seemingly aimless run was causing his marker to lose track of him.

Finally, just as Vazquez was about to fire a long-range shot; Sahal cut inside and dashed into the box, where he met the deflected shot; unchallenged and tucked home his fourth goal of the Indian Super League season. It gained the Blasters a point; but it also made Sahal only the second Indian to score in three consecutive ISL games, behind – who else? – Sunil Chhetri.
You might anticipate parallels to the Indian great to resurface over time. And once they do, the debate will have a bit more substance this time.
And it was clear why.
He’s at ease with the ball in his hands, dribbles with finesse and deception; and creates passes and through-balls from the most unlikely of spots. Then there’s the speed and flare, which attracted comparisons to Chhetri right away.
The veteran added that the teenager is a promising potential to keep an eye on.

“If I had to pick one midfielder to root for, it would be Sahal. That guy is an exceptionally talented talent if he realizes his potential; maintains his body, and puts his head on his shoulders. At a press conference in 2019, Chhetri commented, “He is someone that really excites me.”
