David Warner was thrown out for a Ben Stokes no-ball on Day 2 of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting slammed ‘terrible’ umpiring.
When Warner was batting at 17, Stokes, who returned to competitive cricket the day before, outfoxed him. Replays revealed that the English all-rounder had overstepped, allowing David Warner to escape.
“If someone upstairs is supposed to be checking these and they haven’t decided that any of those are a no-ball. That’s just pathetic officiating as far as I’m concerned.” he said
“It led to what we saw late in the over. If he’d have been called for a no-ball the first one he bowled. Then of course he’s going to drag his foot back. I’m not sure what’s happened. I’m keen to hear why it hasn’t happened earlier.” he added
Marnus Labuschagne
Warner had already edged two balls that had gone through the slips before settling down. He went on to build an important 100-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne, which helped Australia win.
On the first day of the Test, Australia bowled England out for 147 runs. On the back of a 156-run partnership between David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, the home team maintained their fine form to establish a significant first-innings lead.
Despite the English bowlers making inroads with increased pace and bounce, Warner and Labuschagne played excellent cricket despite losing Marcus Harris early on.
Before being dismissed by Jack Leech, Labuschagne appeared in control, blasting six boundaries and two sixes in a 74-run innings. During his 19-ball stay, Steve Smith looked terrific, but a tiny edge off Ollie Robinson ended his innings.
