Following the sexting incident, Tim Paine resigned as Test captain just weeks before the home Ashes series. In a sad news conference, the 36-year-old announced his retirement, but said he planned to play in the Ashes before taking an indefinite break. Pat Cummins took his place as skipper.
Australia’s head coach, Justin Langer, has suggested that disgraced Test captain Tim Paine may return to the squad. According to Justin Langer, Tim Paine, who is 36 years old, is still a healthy athlete who has kept the door open for a comeback.

Tim Paine loves the game and is a healthy athlete, according to Justin Langer, who hopes to see him play again. While conceding that Paine’s primary concern right now is his mental health.
“He loves cricket. He absolutely loves cricket. And he’s 37. He is a fit as any athlete, certainly in our squad. He looks after himself so well. He’s very focused. So who knows. His No.1 priority at the moment is family as you can imagine, and that’s how it should be. I’m not sure we’ve seen the end of him. But we’ll wait and see. That’ll be his decision.” he said
Since taking over as captain in March 2018 in the aftermath of the ball-tampering controversy, Paine’s reign has been tumultuous. The keeper-batsman helped Australia win the Ashes for the first time since 2001 in England, but he lost two consecutive Test series at home against India.
Langer claimed that Paine was one of his closest friends and that he understood his situation. The former Australian opener praised the veteran for leading the team through difficult times over the last four years.
