Wriddhiman Saha put his best foot forward, according to Aakash Chopra, and left it up to the selectors and team management to decide on his future in the Indian Test team.
Due to a stiff neck, Saha did not retain wickets during New Zealand’s first innings on Day 3 of the ongoing Kanpur Test. However, on Day 4, when Team India’s second innings was in play, he came out to bat and bailed them out with an unbroken 61-run effort.
During a Star Sports discussion over Wriddhiman Saha’s knock, Aakash Chopra pointed out that the wicketkeeper-batter put the ball in the selectors’ court.
“This knock is amazing from two or three angles. There are question marks, people are asking who will play the next match, who will go to South Africa. So he said he will do whatever he can do best and the headache is yours. Even if this is my last Test, I will go away smiling and happy, and that Wriddhiman Saha is brave.” He elaborated
According to the cricketer-turned-commentator, Wriddhiman Saha’s innings was reminiscent of Cheteshwar Pujara’s career-saving. Effort in the second innings of England’s Headingley Test.
Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant’s outstanding performances in the last few months have already pushed Wriddhiman Saha to the post of the backup wicketkeeper. With Srikar Bharat demonstrating his ability behind the stumps in New Zealand’s first innings, the veteran keeper’s spot on the Indian side was also in jeopardy.
“It shows the mindset of this batter. He had come with perfect preparation. There was a lot of pressure on him, to save his spot, there were a lot of questions going to be asked, Srikar Bharat had already kept amazingly well. So you had to save your team here but also think about your career.” he said
To relieve the pressure on his neck, Saha widened his stance. In the fourth innings, his valiant performance enabled India set a difficult 284-run goal for New Zealand.
