Adam Zampa, an Australian leg-spinner, has remarked that he has always been an undervalued talent. He claimed that he enjoys the fact that he is rarely in the spotlight.
In the T20 World Cup 2021, Zampa has been Australia’s standout bowler. He has 12 wickets from six matches with a strike rate of 11.5 and a fantastic economy rate of 5.69. It making him the tournament’s second best wicket-taker. With figures of 5 for 19. He ripped through Bangladesh’s batting line-up to set up a key win for Australia, easing their way to the semi-finals.
The 29-year-old spinner believes that he will be underrated even after the T20 World Cup 2021 is done.
“I’ve always been underestimated. Even as a 15 or 16-year-old growing up in the country. There was always a city guy that’s better than me. There’s always been someone that turns their leg-spinner more than I do. Even after this tournament, there’ll be another series that comes up and I’ll be underestimated again. I do thrive off that.” he said
Zampa credits his recent success to understanding his strengths. Doing the little things well like as keeping short strides on his run-in. Which helps him put pace and also spin on the ball.
Josh Hazlewood
The Australian leg-spinner has outshined Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins, who have claimed nine, eight, and five wickets respectively.
However, Zampa took 1 for 22 in the semi-final against Pakistan. He took the crucial wicket of Babar Azam and also is poised to play a significant role in the final against New Zealand.
One of Zampa’s strongest attributes, according to teammate Marcus Stoinis, is being “very honest.” Even after claiming a five-for against Bangladesh, he felt he didn’t bowl properly, he admitted.
“He was brilliant (in the semi-final) and took complete control of his four overs and of the innings at that stage where (Pakistan) were going really well. The great thing about Zamps is he’s super honest. He took his five wickets the other night and he felt like he didn’t bowl well. That’s a quality of a good player, when you’re picking apart your own game and you understand exactly what you’re doing.” he said
Stoinis was instrumental in Australia’s semi-final victory over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021. He hit an undefeated 40 and was part of an 81-run partnership with Matthew Wade (41* off 17 balls).
