Former England captain Michael Vaughan questioned India’s status as favorites in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, claiming the Virat Kohli-led team has “been a long way off in their last few championships.” Vaughan went on to say that England is the favorite to win the T20 World Cup, which kicks off on October 17 with qualifying rounds.
Virat Kohli
With immense firepower in their batting and bowling, Virat Kohli’s India will enter the T20 World Cup 2021 as one of the favorites for the trophy. On October 24, India will kick off their campaign against Pakistan in a high-profile match at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai.
“England for me are the favourites. I don’t know how India gets the ‘favourites’ tag in T20 cricket. I just think they’ve been a long way off in the last few tournaments,” Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special.
“Pakistan and the West Indies will pose a threat. Pakistan is another country that I would also not dismiss. New Zealand has also world-class players, and you can bet they’ll devise winning strategies.
“I’ll tell it right now: I don’t think Australia stands a chance. They’ve struggled in T20 cricket. Glenn Maxwell is a fantastic player, so he’ll need to have a fantastic tournament.
“But I don’t see the Aussies doing too much. England, India, West Indies, New Zealand, one of those four and maybe Pakistan because of the conditions,” Vaughan said.
The pitches, according to the former England captain, will also be essential in determining the tournament’s destiny.
