Rashid Khan’s long-awaited return to professional cricket has been further delay as the talismanic Afghanistan all-rounder withdrew from the forthcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL), which begins on February 17.
Rashid’s last international appearance was on November 10, 2023, in an ODI World Cup match against South Africa. After the headline event, he had lower-back surgery in the UK and has been out of competitive cricket ever since.
Rashid traveled to India with the Afghanistan team for a three-match T20I series, however he was unable to play and spent the entire series on the sidelines. The 25-year-old has been with the Lahore Qalandars for the past three seasons, winning the title in 2022 and 2023. He will not, however, be able to represent the team while undergoing rehabilitation.
The leg-spinner retained by the organization in the’silver’ salary bracket ahead of the December draft. The understanding that he would be unlikely to be available for the upcoming edition but may be retained for subsequent seasons. Now that Rashid’s unavailability has been verified, the Qalandars will be able to recruit a substitute player in the supplementary and replacement draft.

Rashid has decided to forego many franchise tournaments after undergoing surgery, including the PSL 2024. He had previously withdrawn from both the Big Bash League and the SA20. Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, state that Rashid’s comeback should not be rushed.
“It is a case of us being really careful with his back. We must ensure that he is fully prepared before returning from surgery, as he is a key player. When he is ready, he will be the first to take the field. He has a few more appointments and check-ups to ensure everything is in order, so there is no set timeframe. ESPNcricinfo quoted Trott as saying, “I hope it’s sooner rather than later, but there’s no pressure or rush.”
According to ESPNcricinfo, Rashid is likely to be ready for the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he may be able to recover sooner, and if so, he might play in Afghanistan’s multi-format series against Ireland in the UAE from February 28 to March 18.
