Former Australia cricketer Ian Chappell has weighed in on current India player Shreyas Iyer following his disappointing performance on Day 1 of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer, who batted fifth, was unable to express himself with the bat. He bowl for a duck by Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann on the second delivery of his innings. In their first innings, India were dismiss for 109 runs.

I haven’t watched it yet, but India’s batting on Day 1 did not impress Ian Chappell.

I keep hearing that Shreyas Iyer is a great spin bowler, but I haven’t seen him yet, and I’m not sure. The former top-order batsman was blunt in his criticism of Shreyas Iyer and his teammates. He said the Indian batting line-up looked fragile on Day 1, allowing the Australian spinners to easily get the best of them, which was assisted by the shifting Indore surface. In both initial Tests, he likened India’s batting to Australia’s awful batting.
He then made a categorical remark against Shreyas Iyer. Chappell remarked that he did not want to believe the popular belief that he had heard about the 28-year-old that he was a terrific spin player. This is because Iyer had yet to provide him with any substantial proof of it. On Day 1, he had an opportunity to capitalize, but he blew it.
“There are several guys on the Indian team who have yet to persuade me that they are strong spin bowlers. I felt the Aussies frightened India early on. A few things happened throughout the pitch. The Aussie spinners bowled with pinpoint accuracy. But what we witnessed from the Indians was Australian-style hitting.”
