In devastating news, former West Indies wicketkeeper-batter David Murray collapsed and died outside his Bridgetown house on Saturday, November 26th. He was 72. Murray was well-known for his glovework behind the wickets and is regards as one of the best stumpers in Caribbean cricket history.

Murray was only allowed 19 Test and 10 One Day International appearances between 1973 and 1982. Despite having all the skills to be a good wicketkeeper.

Murray grew up around cricket because his father, Everton Weekes, was a great West Indian batter. In fact, David Murray’s son Ricky Hoyte played the game for Barbados as a wicketkeeper-batter in the 1990s.

Despite the fact that Murray was an exceptionally brilliant gloveman. His drug addiction got the best of him, and he was on the verge of being kick off the 1975-76 Australia tour. It wasn’t until Lance Gibbs interven that team management decide to reconsider their decision.

Murray was reportedly a cigarette smoker and marijuana user from a young age, and later in his international cricketing career, he became addicted to cocaine.

The late cricketer was forced to join the West Indies rebel trips to South Africa because he had few opportunities to play for his country. For which he received a lifetime ban in 1983.

In Bridgetown, where he had no source of income and was unable to find a stable job to make ends meet, his erratic behavior and decision to leave the national cricket team were just a few of the factors that contributed to his miserable life.

His frequent use of drugs and addiction to smoking led to reports that his health kept getting worse. In 19 Test matches, Murray scored three half-centuries and amassed a double century in first-class cricket.
