Veteran opening batsman Guptill of New Zealand is the third New Zealand player to choose to forego signing a central contract, joining Colin de Grandhomme and Trent Boult. The choice make in response to his exclusion from the just-complete T20I series against India.

The experienced batter received accolades from NZC CEO David White for his outstanding efforts and services to the national squad. He said the board would not prevent him from looking into options outside of New Zealand. The flamboyant batsman continues to hold the record for the second-highest individual score in ODI cricket with a 237*. And he is the third-highest run scorer for the Kiwis in the 50-over format.
